Following is a brief overview of my musical profile.
1958 - 1970: This period was spent working and touring Europe and UK with a variety of jazz and commercial ensembles. Big bands, jazz ensembles, theatre work. This included time spent traveling world cruises playing in ships orchestra's. Sort of 'have sax,will travel' lifestyle
1971 - 1980: Arrived in Perth WA, newly married.
Formed jazz ensemble 'The Roger Garrood Quartet' and this group proved to be highly active on the Perth jazz scene.
Played flute and piccolo with the WA Arts Orchestra for two years. Performed and recorded with the WASO (West Australian Symphony Orchestra) on flute,alto flute, alto sax and tenor sax. Lead alto with the Will Upson Big Band doing TV shows, studio recordings and TV/radio jingles.
1981 - 1990: Formed the WA Saxophone Quartet which gave numerous recitals including two live to air broadcasts for ABC Radio. Reformed the 'New Roger Garrood Quartet'. Supported jazz artists coming to perform in Perth and played countless live theatre productions. Commenced sessional teaching at WAAPA Edith Cowan University (West Australian Academy of Performing Arts) teaching Principal Study, Ensemble, Sight Reading and Jazz Theory.
1991 - onwards: Full time lecturer at WAAPA until retiring in 2003, then sessional staff until 2009.
Current positions include: Musical Director for the WAYJO Swingband (West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra).
Founder and musical director for 'The Retrosonics', an eleven piece funk, soul, blues band and 'The Roger Garrood Quartet'.
Have worked with: Ray Charles, Sammy Davies Junior, Dakota Staton, Ricky May, Lovelace Watkins, Henry Mancini, Natalie Cole, Shirley Bassey
Jazz artists: Ronnie Scott, Ritchie Cole, Ben Sidran, Red Rodney, Nat Adderley.
Australian jazz artists: Dale Barlow, Bob Sedergreen, John Morrison, James Morrison.
